Week 6/7 Journal Reflection- Chats and Discussion Boards

As I continue to work on online presentations and activities, I am noticing how chats and discussion boards are a great way to really interact with students and peers. I have noticed that I like to view the discussion boards to check what is going on, how other people are doing, and how assignments are getting completed. I feel that if I have a question or concern the discussion board usually has the answer I am looking for. I also appreciate reading comments or feedback for my own understanding.

If I taught a class online I would definitely have a discussion board for questions and comments, as well as, have one for each week. I think it is great to have the option to check in and see how everyone is doing or what they are doing for the assignment. Personally, the discussion boards have helped me make sure I am on the right track. I feel chat and discussion boards really help with creating a welcoming environment.

I feel it is very important to set expectations with communicating through email, chat, and discussion boards. I have already noticed the difference in communication throughout this course. It is really important to have clear expectations. I currently teach 4th grade, and I know that teaching procedures and expectations are essential to being successful in the classroom. I believe it is the exact same for online courses. You need to set the expectations up front and hold your students accountable for them.

I liked this assignment of creating a presentation and having a scavenger hunt for extended knowledge. I think that is a fantastic way to help make sure you reach all student needs and understanding. I like that it does reteach the expectations. I also liked being able to provide a variety of resources, instead of just my one presentation. I am going to use this strategy in my classroom!
